Studio
Watercolour, printmaking and creative practice.
Alongside the technical and academic work, I keep an active painting and printmaking practice across watercolour, Chinese painting, acrylics and gouache.
Practice
A discipline that keeps the others honest.
I have recently begun working in printmaking, a discipline I take as seriously as the others because it asks something the other two do not: judgement made in a medium that will not let you edit your way out of a bad decision.
Watercolour and gouache reward patience, planning and a tolerance for irreversibility. Acrylics allow more revision, but bring their own discipline of timing and layering.
Printmaking adds process: the willingness to commit to a plate, a sequence and a registration. Many of the same instincts that make a good policy framework or a careful piece of historical argument show up at the page and at the press. The practice keeps me sharp.
